Founded by Adam Hobbs and James Arnold, 1856 is a neighborhood bottle shop and bar in Portland, Oregon, featuring a thoughtfully curated selection of beer, wine, and cider from around the world. Our focus is simple: to offer interesting, high-quality beverages at approachable prices in a warm and welcoming environment that makes discovering something new feel comfortable and enjoyable.

James Arnold, owner of JRA Green Building and co-owner of 1856, led the design and construction of the space, including the custom concrete bar that serves as the heart of our shop. He continues to shape the evolution of 1856, from the addition of our covered outdoor patio to ongoing operational support.

Adam Hobbs, a native Oregonian, has spent more than 25 years in the beer and wine industry. His passion lies in discovering exceptional beer, wine, and cider and creating community-centered spaces where people can gather, explore, and enjoy.
